    בַּעַלm. (b. h.; preced.) 1) husband. Kidd.I, 1 and she becomes her own master בגט ובמיתת הב׳ through a letter of divorce or on the husbands death; a. v. fr. 2) the idol Baal. Y.Ab. Zar. III, 43a bot. ב׳ ראש גוייה הוהוכ׳ the Baal was the phallus and had the shape of a bean (read וכאפון). 3) ( the fructifier, rain (v. Taan.6b; cmp. Is. 55:10). בֵּית בַּ׳ a field sufficiently watered by rain and requiring no artificial irrigation. Tosef.M. Kat. I, 1 שדה (בית) הב׳. B. Bath.III, 1. Tosef.Succ.II, 7 ערבה של ב׳ (sub. בית) a willow in a naturally watered field. Ib. Shebi. II, 4 בשל ב׳ (= בשדה של ב׳), opp. של שוקי. Num.     נָחָשm. (b. h.; נָחַש) 1) ( the hissing, serpent. Gen. R. s. 22 נ׳ הקדמוני the original serpent (the seducer of Eve). Ib. s. 20 נ׳ זה רשע בעל תשובות that serpent is wicked and skilled in arguments. Bekh.8a נ׳ לשבע שניםוכ׳ a serpents pregnancy lasts seven years, and for that wicked animal I find no parallel (in the vegetable kingdom). Gen. R. s. 54 הנ׳ של בית the domestic serpent (harmless); a. fr.Pl. נְחָשִׁים. Ib. s. 84 נ׳ ועקרבים snakes and scorpions; a. fr. 2) a pungent ( poisonous) fluid in the leaves or in the stems of onions kept for a long time in the ground.     רָשָׁעm. (b. h.; preced. wds.) wicked man, wrongful claimant. Snh.27a (ref. to Ex. 23:1) אל תשתר׳ עד allow not a wicked man to be witness. Ib. 9b ר׳ הוא והתורה אמרהוכ׳ he is a (self-confessed) wicked man, and the Law says, allow not Ib. אין אדם משים עצמור׳ none can incriminate himself (his testimony against himself has no legal effect). Ib. 27a ר׳ דחמס בעינן (to be disqualified in court) he must be a wicked man connected with violence (but you cannot disqualify a sinner against ceremonial laws). Gen. R. s. 20 נחש זהר׳ בעל תשובות that serpent is a wicked creature rich in arguments.
